Al's Journal

May 26, 2007

It’s Saturday and we finished our project assignment a week ago last Thursday. Since our next assignment doesn’t begin until June 4 right here at Glen Eyrie, we have two weeks for fun. However, so far we have spent most of our time with medical appointments of one sort or another. Anitarae’s new glasses were not working out so she had to have another exam. It turns out the exam she had in Mississippi resulted in a wrong prescription so she has to have new lenses made. Then she had to have blood work done at the hospital to determine the cause of her digestive tract problems. I finally got in to see an ENT doctor about my sinus problem, which according to him is not a sinus problem. Two dentists told me it was and now he was sending me back to a dentist. The third dentist sent me to an endodontist for a root canal to be followed by a crown back in his office. Perhaps it was the estimated cost of $2500 that raised my blood pressure, but at any rate they wouldn’t do the work because my bp was too high. So I went to an internist who has switched my med. Hopefully, that will do the trick and I can get the dental work done here where there are plenty of good dentists. Yesterday, we spent the afternoon getting another pair of tires. We had two replaced in MS and thought the other two would serve for six months or so. However, when I was washing the truck yesterday, I saw a large bulge in the sidewall and knew time was up. So... one week down ... some fun. I guess I am grateful that we had all this free time to take care of these situations. Now, let the fun begin.

Yesterday morning, we went for a hike in Queen’s Canyon, which is right here on Glen Eyrie property. We are so fortunate to be staying here. We walked right out of our rv site, down to the Castle, and on to the trail. It is a beautiful hike up through the canyon. The path follows the brook, which adds to the charm, but also to the challenge. Jacque hiked with us; his little legs going much, much faster that ours. He was a trooper trying to keep up. He did stop often to pick up the scent of wildlife along the trail’s edge. The challenge of the stream was that Jacque couldn’t cross on the rocks or logs by himself and I had to carry him. I suppose this would not have been much of a problem when I was younger, but I’m finding that one of the problems of being 64 is balance. I just don’t trust my feet anymore. A fall in this stream meant likely injury on the rocks, not to mention the fact that it is melting snow run off. Brrrr. So, we only made five of the seven crossings to get to the falls. The six seemed much too difficult. We decided to turn back and attempt it again another day without Jacque. Now I’m not so sure, though. Last night, Anitarae heard an account that brings a new element of fear. She went to a Bible study for the international students volunteering here. She left at 7 and didn’t return ‘til almost midnight. It’s a safe place and I shouldn’t have worried, but I did. She’s usually in bed about 10 so perhaps she had fallen asleep somewhere on the grounds or something. Anyway, some of those students had hiked Queen’s Canyon this week and encountered a rattlesnake all coiled and ready to attack. Apparently, a local guy took a stick to it and flung it out of the path. What would I do?

Today, we are going to Old Colorado City for the Memorial Day weekend celebration. They are having “Territory Days” and even a gunfight seems safer than encountering a rattlesnake.

The medical accounts sound awful. You should be more like me and not go to the dentist at all. (I know I'm the only one who is dumb enough to think that's funny; I'll be laughing all the way to my liquid dinner.)

Alan, that sounds interesting. You should post a picture.

I agree. Don't go to the dentist until it's an emergency. THen you can go to the hospital where more insurance is accepted.

Alan,

Did you really, completely shave your head? That's "over the top!"

Will you post your picture or am I going to have to come over there!?
