Al's Journal ... 5/4/07

Dear Family,
This journal entry is about Colorado and I am frustrated because I can't describe it in a way that does it justice. This is a beautiful place and we are really enjoying life here. We miss you all and I keep wishing you could experience this kind of life. I know it's because of God's blessing and I hope you will draw close enough to Him to benefit, also. I love you.

Our first week at Glen Eyrie is nearing an end. It has gone quickly as all good times do. We are very happy here for many reasons. Actually, we feel blessed to be here in this beautiful place. Colorado, especially this area of Colorado Springs, offers an eye feast in almost every direction. Glen Eyrie is adjacent to Garden of the Gods and the rock formations are awesome. I was blown away by the beauty of the snow covered mountains and blue skies when we arrived and I’m still stunned by it every day. I keep saying stuff like, “I can’t believe how beautiful this place is.” We are in a first class conference center where everything is done with caring and quality. I spend my day working around the facility and I am enjoying the mountain views, the flower gardens, the colorful spring blossoms on the trees, the spectacular castle and sunshine and blue skies. The sun is brighter and hotter and the sky is bluer because of the 6600 foot elevation. The only downside is the difficulty we have breathing because the oxygen level is so much less than we are used to.

Mark, our supervisor, makes our work satisfying. He is organized and pleasant and very appreciative. It’s hard to tell who’s doing whom a favor. The staff keeps thanking us and we keep saying how glad we are to be in a place such as this. Our Sower team consists of just three couples, which is too bad because The Glen really has a lot of work for us to do and has made a superior effort to be prepared for Sowers. They have carved out twelve rv sites. They call it Volunteer Vista because it’s at the top of a steep hill. The sites are very pretty with red stone between each and low wattage landscaping lights for each site. This is definitely the best volunteer parking area we have been in. Ken and Romelle Richards are our group leaders and have been very friendly. This morning, on our first day off, they had us over for brunch. We feasted on waffles then sat around talking for quite a while. This afternoon we had a guided tour of the Glen Eyrie castle and Navigators National Headquarters. Glen Eyrie, where we are working, is actually a part of Navigators.

We have many wonderful opportunities right at our door. Last night we attended a National Day of Prayer service at a very large church where John Mac Arthur was the speaker. That was a privilege and an inspiration. Focus on the Family headquarters is very near and some Sunday we may even get to see Dr. Dobson at the Nazarene church he attends. I am excited about the possibility of driving to one of the great ski areas I’ve heard about all my life. Breckenridge, Vail, and Aspen are all within reach.

I am so glad we decided to sign up to work here for May and June.
