Journal: March 5

March 5, 2006
We now have only one month to spend in Florida. I had been looking forward to this wintertime in Florida and now it’s two-thirds over. I feel as if we have to cherish each day and find a way to stretch out the time. Normally I would be anxious for these months to pass quickly so spring would come. It’s not beautiful here in Florida. There’s a lot of barrenness and not a lot of trees. We’ve also noticed there’s not a lot of birds. However, it’s warm and sunny. I suppose spring and summer will bring more flowers and color to beautify the area. We are now in central Florida and there are hills and small lakes. We haven’t explored much yet, but it seems to be prettier here.

We just arrived at Clermont, which is NW of Orlando. There are signs to Disney World so we must be fairly close. We will be working at African Inland Mission, a retirement center for missionaries to Africa. We met several of the missionaries Friday at a music night. They are a lively bunch. Other sowers have told us this is a favorite place to work and that we will become involved with the missionaries. We are looking forward to that.

Our sower RV area is very compact. We are packed in so close that we are in danger of hearing each other’s snoring. It’s a good thing we’re a friendly group. There are 24 of us altogether, but six of those are in apartments. Usually the groups have mostly motorhomes, but this month eight of the nine RVs are fifth wheels. That means we take our trucks whenever we go as a group. Right now our back seat is filled with my tools so we usually hitch a ride. I’d like to be able to share in the driving so I’m looking for another truck toolbox to put in front of the tailgate. The problem is it needs to be low profile so the trailer hitch can get by it. I found one for $469, but that’s too much.

We have been trying to set up our schedule for April and May, but we are having trouble. We want to go to Mississippi to help with hurricane relief. We chose to sign up with ROAM, the Nazarene group, but communication has been difficult. We are signed up to go to Gautier, MS and we are supposed to call the man in charge there, but have been unsuccessful so far. I believe we will nail it down soon and when we do we will try to sign up for a project in Tennessee for May. Then we will start home and probably will be back early in June.

Tomorrow begins our work assignments. I’m ready. I like the free time and I like the work time. There is a nice balance and it keeps me from boredom. This is a great life. I hope we can continue it for many years.

like an x- stepfather-in-law used to say, it's amazing what money will buy.
