Journal: January 26

Today was our last day of work and already we are saying goodbye to some of our new friends. That’s the hard part. The good part is we may have a chance to work with them again. In fact, we will work with the Brouwers, a nice Dutch couple from Canada, next month in Tampa and with the Quakkelars in March. The Brouwers emigrated to Canada from Holland when they were a young couple. They left shortly after the end of WW2 which devastated their area. They lived through the war as teenagers and have many stories to tell. In fact, they showed a DVD documentary of the war in Holland to our group one night. When they arrived in Canada, they lived in poverty with no electricity, no plumbing, and very little food. They actually had an outhouse. They were desperate and would have returned to Holland but had no money for that either. They are a wonderful couple, full of laughter and joy. Their Dutch accent is very strong and actually delightful. I’m glad we will be together again.
I really enjoyed reading Jack’s and Emma’s notes on the blog tonight. We miss them as well as the rest of our family. Emma, I know how nervous you might feel about your trumpet solo, but it’s a good and a growing experience. You’ll be glad you did it when it’s over. I’m glad you’re into music. It teaches you so much, even beyond the music stuff. I also enjoyed Alan’s phone call and I’m glad you got a chance to play table tennis with those guys. They probably won’t make the connection, but I said several times to them how much I wished you could be there. I told them you would be impressive.
Now we have almost a week to enjoy being here without a work schedule. We’ll have time to relax, have fun and prepare for our next project where we will be group leaders. We need to give some time to thought and planning for that. Tomorrow, I hope to build a little desk cubby for our computer center in the rv. We need to organize that space. I love little projects like that so I’m looking forward to it.
