On religion as a cause of war

It seems like every time I go somewhere there's a stage, I hear someone proclaim vitriolically that "RELIGION IS THE #1 CAUSE OF WAR!!!!" Have you heard this? It's usually said with a lot of authority and righteous indignation. I guess, you know, they're hearkening back to the Old Testament and then skipping a couple millenia and referencing the Crusades, and then making a connection between today's American Christian church, its support of Bush, and Bush's war in Iraq.

I think their argument is narrow-minded. I think it could be argued that the church throughout history has been an institution for peacekeeping and forgiveness. That's the context that makes this article most interesting. Note that the "churches have been appeased . . . Not so though the Malaysian Indian Congress" which is further convoluted by the fact that their party is comprised of Hindus.

Once I saw a t-shirt that read, "Who would Jesus bomb?" I thought it was thought provoking.
