Work

My new job is really mind-boggling. Basically, I am ensuring that the all the software on the computers from [a company] that just merged with [my company] are licensed appropriately. I don't think there are any cohesive reports that state what all these applications are, and if there were they certainly wouldn't contain the licensing information on them, so it's my job to track down numerous spreadsheets and integrate them.

I think.

Anyway, it's the most responsibility I've ever had and it would be completely overwhelming, except I don't think the managers know exactly what they are looking for. Their expectations are that as I fumble along a clearer picture will develop regarding what they want, and hopefully all of my fumbling will have made me knowledgeable enough to actualize their vision.

I, um, think. And after Day One I'm still thrilled to be working. I lunched in the Inner Harbor, watching people and boats and fountains. My bike ride to and from was made invigorating not just by traffic but by the music of my new mp3 player, which has an armband. I listened to an album called WHOHM, which I noticed as I glanced down at it on my arm, looks just the same backwards, forwards, and upside-down. And it rocks.

WHOHM
I wrote it on a piece of paper and flipped over to reaveal the same word.

WHen I aasked the students to name this phenomena they wanted to know the opposite of palindrome.

Two favorite choices were flipindrome and flip-flop.
The winning choice was to call it a flip flopper.

15 minutes successfully ...

Alan and I looked it up last night, it's an ambigram, but I like flipindrome too! Hey Adam, sounds like you have a handle on things at your job. I guess with the right perspective, anything can seem possible. Congrats on your mp3 player!!!

I like flipindrome. I also like ambigram. Those are both good words and I don't know which one is better.

I used my mp3 player to listen to NPR on my bike ride to work this morning. It was an awesome bike ride, in which I learned how easy it is to get an ear infection from swimming. I also swerved through traffic like a superhero.

Sounds like a beautiful thing, makes me want to ride my bike to work..... though I don't think anything would make me want to ride it home. How do you listen to npr on your mp3? I've never done that, is it just a download?

Nah, my mp3 player is a Rio Sport, just a little gadget that holds about 20 songs and also has a radio tuner.

I think riding a bike up that hill would kill me.
